Whether you are considering graduate school or business school, or still deciding what to do, you only need to take the one test accepted by thousands of graduate and business schools worldwide (PDF), the GRE® General Test. It is the only graduate-level admissions test that lets you skip questions and go back, change your answers and tackle the questions you want to answer first.
Plus, the GRE General Test provides the ScoreSelect® option, which means you can take a GRE test now or again in the future, and only send schools your best set of scores. Best of all, you have five years to decide how to use any of your scores. • Verbal Reasoning — Measures your ability to analyze and evaluate written material and synthesize information obtained from it, analyze relationships among component parts of sentences and recognize relationships among words and concepts. • Quantitative Reasoning — Measures problem-solving ability using basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis. • Analytical Writing — Measures critical thinking and analytical writing skills, specifically your ability to articulate and support complex ideas clearly and effectively.

The GRE® General Test features question types that closely reflect the kind of thinking you’ll do — and the skills you need to succeed — in today’s demanding graduate and business school programs. The test-taker friendly design lets you skip questions within a section, go back and change answers and have the flexibility to choose which questions within a section you want to answer first. Get a look at the structure of the computer-delivered or paper-delivered GRE General Test.
The GRE General Test measures your verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing skills — skills that have been developed over a long period of time and are not related to a specific field of study but are important for all. Here’s a look at content covered in the three test sections — Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing.

The Verbal Reasoning section measures your ability to:

  • Read the instructions and questions carefully before you listen.

  • Try to get an idea of the situation. Who are the speakers? Where are they? Why are they speaking?

  • Remember, you will only hear the audio once. You will need to read, write and listen all at the same time

The Quantitative Reasoning section measures your ability to:

  • Articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively

  • Support ideas with relevant reasons and examples

  • Examine claims and accompanying evidence

The Quantitative Reasoning section includes an on-screen calculator. If you are taking the paper-delivered test, a calculator will be provided at the test center.

The Analytical Writing section measures your ability to:

  • Articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively

  • Support ideas with relevant reasons and examples

  • Examine claims and accompanying evidence

  • Sustain a well-focused, coherent discussion

  • Control the elements of standard written English

The Analytical Writing section requires you to provide focused responses based on the tasks presented, so you can accurately demonstrate your skill in directly responding to a task.

Internet-based test

Since its introduction in late 2005, the TOEFL Internet-based Test (iBT) format has progressively replaced the computer-based tests (CBT) and paper-based tests (PBT), although paper-based testing is still used in select areas. The TOEFL iBT test has been introduced in phases, with the United States, Canada, France, Germany, and Italy in 2005 and the rest of the world in 2006, with test centers added regularly. The CBT was discontinued in September 2006 and these scores are no longer valid.
Initially, the demand for test seats was higher than availability, and candidates had to wait for months. It is now possible to take the test within one to four weeks in most countries.[8] The four-hour test consists of four sections, each measuring one of the basic language skills (while some tasks require integrating multiple skills), and all tasks focus on language used in an academic, higher-education environment. Note-taking is allowed during the TOEFL iBT test. The test cannot be taken more than once every 12 days.
